Enumerating same-sex couples in censuses and population registers
نویسنده
چکیده
The recommendations recently issued by the Conference of European Statisticians (CES) for the next round of population and housing censuses underline for the first time that some countries might find it in their interest to enumerate same-sex couples. Many pitfalls can be expected when such a sensitive topic is newly included in a census. The experience of the few western countries that have already taken initiatives in this direction helps identify difficulties to be faced and suggest “good practices” to be adopted. Coverage is extended to countries which rely on permanent registers rather than periodic censuses to enumerate their population. 1 Institut national d'études démographiques, France. Same-sex couples are less likely to be homogamous than different-sex couples on a variety of characteristics including race/ethnicity, age, and education. This study confirms results from previous studies which used 1990 U.S. census data and extends previous analyses to examine changes from 1990 to 2000. We find that same-sex male cohabitors are generally the least likely to resemble one anothe...

متن کامل" Editing Unmarried Couples in Census Bureau Data " Summary
In Census Bureau classifications, married-couple households only consist of opposite-sex couples, while unmarried partner households may consist of either opposite-or same-sex couples. This classification relies not only on the accuracy of the responses to the household relationship item—either as a spouse or unmarried partner—but also to those on gender. Although gender is usually the most acc...

Editorials 134 All governments need detailed information on their populations to design and run their health systems effectively. Most countries collect a large part of these data through a census; an exercise often held once every decade that aims to count every inhabitant of every household. With growing populations, the census becomes progressively more difficult and costly. Some countries a...
